In a surprising move, the Phoenix Suns have made a strategic shift this offseason by adding two point guards to their roster. This decision comes after playing much of the previous season without a true point guard, relying heavily on Devin Booker to fill the role.
The first addition to the Suns’ lineup is Collin Gillespie, the former Denver Nuggets player who previously went undrafted in 2022. Despite missing the entire 2022-23 season due to a broken leg, Gillespie still received a championship ring after the Nuggets emerged victorious in the 2023 NBA Finals. He returned to the Nuggets on another two-way deal for the 2023-24 season, showcasing his talent in 24 games where he averaged 3.6 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in limited minutes. Additionally, Gillespie had a remarkable stint in the G League with the Grand Rapid Gold, almost averaging a triple-double with 21.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 11.0 assists.
“Collin has been dominating in the G League, and we believe he has the potential to bring that level of performance to the NBA,” said Suns head coach in a statement.
The second point guard added to the Suns’ roster is Monte Morris, who joins the team on a one-year deal after a lackluster tenure with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Morris was acquired by the Timberwolves at the trade deadline and was expected to provide stability as a backup point guard. However, he struggled in the postseason, averaging just 2.3 points on 30% shooting in nine games.
“Monte is looking to rebound after his disappointing time in Minnesota. We’re confident that he can make a significant impact on our team,” commented the Suns’ general manager.
As the Suns gear up for the upcoming season, the addition of both Gillespie and Morris brings depth and versatility to their backcourt. With Booker’s experience as a lead guard last season and the new acquisitions, Phoenix is poised to have a more balanced and dynamic lineup in the 2023-24 NBA campaign.
