In a surprising move earlier today, the Memphis Grizzlies traded small forward Ziaire Williams to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Mamadi Diakite. This trade has sparked speculation that the Grizzlies are now looking to bring another player back to the team. According to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, the Grizzlies are expected to re-sign free agent Luke Kennard, a former lottery pick.
The 2023-24 season marked Kennard’s first full season with the Grizzlies after being acquired from the Los Angeles Clippers in February 2023. During that season, the Ohio native averaged 11 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. He also boasted impressive shooting percentages, with 44.8% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc.
Kennard is known for his exceptional three-point shooting skills, having led the league in three-point field goal percentage twice in his career. With his veteran experience dating back to 2017, he brings valuable leadership to the team. While he is expected to come off the bench next season, Kennard has proven that he can start if necessary. In the previous season, he started 22 games for the Grizzlies, the most since the 2019-20 season where he started 25 games. While defense may not be his strongest suit, the presence of defensive anchors Marcus Smart and Jaren Jackson Jr. should help mitigate any weaknesses in that area for Memphis.
As the Grizzlies look to rebuild after a disappointing 27-55 record last season, bringing back Kennard could be a smart move. Despite missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020, the team faced numerous challenges due to injuries. Star player Ja Morant was limited to just nine games due to a shoulder injury, while Desmond Bane and Marcus Smart also missed significant playing time. Just two seasons ago, the Grizzlies boasted a 51-31 record and secured the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference.
If the Grizzlies can secure Kennard on a reasonable contract, it could mark a positive step forward in their efforts to climb back up the standings. The reunion between Kennard and the Grizzlies could prove mutually beneficial as they seek to return to their winning ways.
