The NBA has seen its fair share of sibling duos, from the Gasol brothers to the Lopez twins. But one pair that has flown under the radar in recent years is the Morris brothers – Markieff and Marcus. These identical twins have had quite the journey in the league, starting with being selected with back-to-back picks in the 2011 NBA Draft. Markieff was taken 13th overall by the Phoenix Suns, while Marcus followed right after at 14th.
The Morris brothers went on to become teammates with the Suns, playing two full seasons together from 2013-14 to 2014-15. It’s no secret that the brothers share a special bond, as they not only played together but also share the same birth date – September 2, 1989. Markieff, being the older twin by seven minutes, has always looked out for Marcus both on and off the court.
Now, as they both enter free agency, Markieff is making it known that he wants to reunite with his brother once again, this time with the Dallas Mavericks. In a recent interview, Markieff expressed his desire to have Marcus join him in Dallas, stating, “I will be back with the Dallas Mavericks, and I want my brother Marcus to come along for the ride.”
The last time the Morris brothers suited up together was back in 2015 when they were both members of the Phoenix Suns. Despite their efforts, the Suns fell short of making the playoffs during their time together. Eventually, Marcus was traded to the Detroit Pistons, ending their on-court partnership.
Fast forward to today, both Markieff and Marcus find themselves nearing the end of their NBA careers. With 13 seasons under their belts, the twins will soon celebrate their 35th birthdays. While they have been solid contributors throughout their careers, both players have seen a decrease in playing time in recent years.
Marcus, in particular, has been able to carve out a more significant role for himself late in his career. Starting all 65 games for the Los Angeles Clippers in the 2022-23 season, Marcus has proven that he still has plenty left in the tank. With a career-best scoring average of 16.7 points per game in the 2019-20 season, Marcus has shown that he can still be a valuable asset on the court, despite his minutes decreasing last season.
As the Morris brothers look ahead to the next chapter in their careers, one thing is for certain – they are hopeful for a reunion on the court. With Markieff set on returning to the Mavericks, all eyes are now on whether Marcus will join him in Dallas for what could be a fitting end to their NBA journey together. Stay tuned as the NBA offseason continues to unfold, as we may soon see the Morris brothers back in action as teammates once again.
