The New York Knicks have had a solid offseason overall, but there is one glaring weakness at center that could potentially hinder their chances of winning a title in 2024. The departure of Isaiah Hartenstein was a tough loss for the team, and the fact that they have yet to find a replacement is perplexing. It was surprising that they did not use one of their two first-round draft picks this year to address the center position.
Rumors have been circulating that the Knicks are in talks with the Utah Jazz for Walker Kessler, which would be a smart move for the team. As it stands, their center depth is lacking with Mitchell Robinson recovering from ankle surgery. Precious Achiuwa and Jericho Sims, who are both undersized, are the backups for Robinson. Sims, while athletic, lacks the defensive IQ needed for the position. The Knicks need to make a move to add depth and talent at center before the start of the season.
Isaiah Hartenstein may not have been irreplaceable, but his absence will be felt on both ends of the court. He struggled against top-tier centers in the playoffs, but his offensive skills were superior to Robinson’s. Hartenstein’s ability to set screens and create opportunities for his teammates was instrumental to the team’s success. His partnership with Jalen Brunson in pick-and-roll situations was one of the most efficient in the league last season.
Mitchell Robinson, on the other hand, is a question mark for the Knicks. While he excels in shot-blocking and offensive rebounding when healthy, he lacks the offensive versatility of Hartenstein. Robinson’s poor free-throw shooting and limited passing ability make him a liability on that end of the floor. The Knicks will have to adjust their game plan without Hartenstein’s offensive contributions.
The key for Robinson will be staying healthy and contributing consistently on both ends of the court. If he can replicate his elite shot-blocking and rebounding numbers from the 2022-23 season, the Knicks’ center position may not be as big of a concern. However, adding depth at the position should be a priority for the team as they prepare for the upcoming season.
