The Los Angeles Clippers are facing a major overhaul heading into the 2024-25 NBA season, with the departure of Paul George, who had been a key player for the team over the past five seasons. With three All-Star appearances under his belt during his time with the Clippers, George’s absence will leave a significant void in the lineup. New additions like Derrick Jones Jr. and Nicolas Batum will have their work cut out for them as they try to keep the team competitive in a tough Western Conference.
Head coach Tyronn Lue will have a tough task ahead of him as he looks to fill the void left by George. All eyes will be on Kawhi Leonard and James Harden to step up and lead the team. However, both Leonard and Harden are facing their own challenges. Leonard has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, while Harden’s scoring prowess has declined since his days with the Houston Rockets.
In a recent report by Law Murray of The Athletic, it was revealed that 14-year NBA veteran Amir Johnson will be joining the Clippers coaching staff, focusing on player development. Johnson, who last played in the NBA during the 2018-19 season, spent the past two seasons playing for the G League Ignite before transitioning into coaching. This opportunity with the Clippers marks his first coaching role at the NBA level.
Despite being drafted late in the 2005 NBA Draft, Johnson managed to carve out a successful 14-year career as a gritty power forward/center. Selected as the 56th overall pick by the Detroit Pistons straight out of high school, Johnson defied the odds to become a reliable veteran in the league. His experience and work ethic will be valuable assets as he transitions into coaching with the Clippers.
The Clippers will face a challenging season ahead as they navigate a new roster and coaching staff. With Johnson’s arrival bringing a wealth of experience and knowledge to the team, there is hope that the Clippers can continue to be a competitive force in the NBA.
