In a packed draft night, the New York Knicks, much like their conference rivals, the Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat, managed to secure some promising rookies for the upcoming season. Each player brings a unique set of skills and potential to the table, but they also have some lingering questions that need to be answered as they embark on their NBA journey in the 2024-2025 season.
Let’s start with French wing Pacome Dadiet, the 25th overall pick in the draft. Known for his versatility and ability to play a 3-and-D role, Dadiet showed flashes of brilliance during the summer league. His defensive instincts and smooth jump shot caught the attention of many, although there were some rough patches in his offensive game that he needs to work on. As one scout noted, “Dadiet has immense potential, but he needs to refine certain aspects of his game to truly make an impact.”
Next up, we have Tyler Kolek, the guard out of Marquette who was acquired by the Knicks in a trade after being selected 34th overall. Kolek’s playmaking ability and scoring prowess were on full display during the summer league, where he impressed with his decision-making and scoring in various ways. However, the big question surrounding Kolek is whether he can translate his skills to the NBA level and contribute right away. Coach Tom Thibodeau is looking for someone to run the offense behind Jalen Brunson, and Kolek’s ability to do so could earn him valuable minutes on the court.
Last but not least, we have Ariel Hukporti, the German center who was picked up by the Knicks in exchange for Melvin Ajinca. Hukporti’s shot-blocking and rebounding abilities were evident during the summer league, but his offensive game leaves much to be desired. With a limited offensive skill set and poor free-throw shooting, Hukporti will need to work on expanding his game to secure a long-term spot in the NBA. As one analyst pointed out, “Hukporti has the tools to be a dominant force on defense, but he needs to develop his offensive game to become a well-rounded player.”
Overall, the Knicks’ rookies have plenty of potential, but they also have hurdles to overcome in order to succeed in the NBA. It will be interesting to see how they rise to the challenge and answer the questions that lie ahead in the upcoming season.
