In a clash of titans within the rap world, Golden State Warriors’ own Stephen Curry found himself inadvertently caught in the crossfire between two of the biggest names in the game, Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The ongoing feud between the two rappers had been simmering for years, with subtle jabs exchanged between them, but it reached a boiling point this year when direct references were made.
The tension initially spiked when Drake and J. Cole dropped a track called “First Person Shooter” on Drake’s “For All The Dogs” album in October 2023, where J. Cole dubbed himself, Drake, and Lamar as the “Big 3” of rap. Lamar fired back with a diss on his March 2024 track “Like That,” featuring Future and Metro Boomin, where he claimed the title of the “Big 3” was his alone.
While the feud has somewhat cooled off recently as Drake has pivoted towards a more pop-oriented sound, Stephen Curry found himself discussing the rivalry during an interview with GQ’s Joseph Bien-Kahn. The star player admitted to being slightly irked by one of Lamar’s diss tracks, “Not Like Us,” which seemed to be constantly playing everywhere, even at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi after Team USA’s exhibition victory over Serbia. Curry quipped, “It’s not the only song in America,” highlighting his annoyance with the track’s omnipresence. Interestingly, LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers, had a different view, stating his love for the song.
The six-time NBA All-Star also found himself referenced in Lamar’s diss track “Meet the Grahams” alongside LeBron James. The Grammy-winning artist warned both Curry and James to steer clear of getting entangled with the Canadian rapper, Drake. Lamar went on to make some controversial accusations against Drake, alleging his involvement with underage girls and his secretive fatherhood.
As tensions continue to flare in the world of rap, it seems that Stephen Curry will need to navigate carefully to avoid getting embroiled further in the ongoing feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar. The basketball superstar’s inadvertent involvement serves as a reminder that even in the world of music, rivalries can spill over into unexpected territories.
